Chan Mind of Joyful Delight

Enlightening Texts to Inspire Insight

In order to promote the fund-raising project “A Great Vow to Establish Dharma Drum University,” Master Sheng Yen, founder of Dharma Drum Mountain, organized “Free Mind and Chan Delight: Exhibition of Calligraphy by Master Sheng Yen” in February, 2007. Part of the donated money was then used to construct the residential hall “Chanyue (Joy of Chan) Hall.”

In recognition of Master Sheng Yen’s endeavors to foster education, Mr. Richard K.C. Lee from Hong Kong donated NT$187 million in June 2007 to support the construction of Dharma Drum University’s infrastructural and educational framework, in accordance with his wife Linda Wu Lee Ying’s will. In honor of the merit and in memory of her great vow, the University named the residential hall’s library the “Lee Ying Library,” for the students to immerse themselves in enlightening texts and engage in the college experience to inspire insight.

Chan master Hongzhi Zhengjue (1091-1157) wrote a verse that reads: “Dharma delight as nourishment, compassion as shelter.” Master Sheng Yen opened a door to the “joy of Chan and delight of Dharma,” and his successors will create ways to compassion. Chanyue Hall and the Lee Ying Library will serve as examples to illustrate the spirit of Dharma Drum Mountain’s extensive academic education: compassion, wisdom, harmony, and respect.

Erected in April 2014 in accordance with the will of Dharma Drum Mountain founder Master Sheng Yen.
